Steering group

The IQAS steering group provides expert advice and guidance to the IQAS programme, ensuring its good governance and oversight and taking responsibility for developing the programme and planning its future direction.  The steering group meets twice a year and, as well as the office team and clinical lead includes representatives of all main stakeholders in allergy.

Debbie Johnston
Head Assessor - Royal College of Physicians Accreditation Unit

Debbie has over 30 years' experience in healthcare in nursing, managerial, quality improvement and quality assurance roles. She has a proven track record of delivering large complex programmes and projects at national and international level. Debbie has developed advanced skills in many areas, including; training and leadership skills development; quality improvement; assessor training and development ; change management; programme and business management skills.

Dr Joe Unsworth
Consultant immunologist;member of the JCIA; Representative for the Joint Committee on Allergy and Immunology (JCIA)

Joe has been involved in helping develop the IQAS scheme for accreditation of allergy services since the start of this project in 2010. His research PhD focused on coeliac disease & autoimmunity. He has over 100 peer reviewed publications. Joe was trained in London at the Barts Hospital, qualifying in 1987. He then studied general medicine at the Hammersmith Postgraduate Medical School, and completed clinical immunology post in Bristol in 1994. He routinely sees and manages patients with problems including Allergy, Immunodeficiency, or autoimmune diseases. He also directs the immunology diagnostic laboratory including provision of transplant x-matching & on call.

 

Dr Syed Hasan Arshad 
Consultant immunologist; chair of the AAG; Representative for Adult Allergy Group (AAG)

Dr Hasan Arshad is helping RCP to establish IQAS across the UK. He is a professor of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, (Hon) consultant physician at University Hospital Southampton and Director of the David Hide Asthma and Allergy Research Centre, Isle of Wight. He has published over 200 papers, authored/edited 9 books and 10 book chapters. His allergy department was awarded "World Centre of Excellence" title by the World Allergy Organisation in 2014 for clinical innovation and research. He is a council member of British Society of Allergy & Clinical Immunology, Chair of the Adult Allergy Group and member of national CRG. In 2015, he was elected by the BSACIto receive the prestigious Jack Pepys award for services to allergy in the UK.

 

Carla Jones
Chief executive officer of Allergy UK; Patient group representative

Carla Jones is Chief executive officer of Allergy UK.  Carla is leading the strategic growth of the charity. She represents Allergy UK at instrumental organisations in the field of allergy both in the UK and across Europe including the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI), the European Federation of Allergy and Airways Association (EFA) and the European Academy of Allergy & Clinical Immunology (EAACI). Carla joined Allergy UK in May 2015 with 10 years senior executive experience, leading complex services in the third and public sector. She managed a charity for four years providing specialist palliative hospice care at Pilgrims Hospices, which involved working collaboratively with charity Trustees, clinicians and partner health and social care organisations. The previous six years were focused on leading community development, and social and physical regeneration, in socially deprived areas of East Kent for Thanet District Council. 

Carla has chaired multi-partnership boards and worked closely with local communities, central government, and national and local partners across the public, private and third sector to achieve shared goals.Carla’s academic career involved lecturing and research at Canterbury Christ Church University, linked to early years, psycho-social aspects of health, and evaluating the impact of the government Sure Start initiatives.



Lynne Regent
Chief executive officer of Anaphylaxis Campaign; Patient group representative

Lynne joined the Anaphylaxis Campaign as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in October 2008. Her role is to lead the charity and ensure that it achieves its objective of helping people with severe allergies live their lives. Prior to taking up this role she spent nearly 30 years working in the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK. The final position was as Chief Executive of Crawley Primary Care Trust.
